The story
BAIC is one of China's oldest automakers, established in 1958 by the People's Republic to motorise the new country. Today it is one of the four giants of Chinese industry and the only Chinese passenger brand assembling vehicles on South African soil — at the Coega Special Economic Zone outside Gqeberha. SA sales grew 40% from 2024 to 2025, and the South African government awarded BAIC the official transport contract for the 2025 G20 Summit, the strongest possible trust signal from a state that has options. Buyers in KwaZulu-Natal get a brand that is engineered for tough African conditions, manufactured locally, and backed by Midbay Motors' service network. The lineup spans the urban-friendly B30, the family-sized X55 Plus, and the trail-rated B40 Plus, with hybrid options expanding through 2026.
BAIC assembles vehicles at the Coega plant in Gqeberha — the only Chinese OEM with a full South African manufacturing footprint. The plant supports localisation of components, creates SA jobs, and means parts pipelines run through SA, not exclusively through import.
BAIC FAQs
Every new BAIC sold by Midbay Motors comes with a 5-year / 150 000 km manufacturer warranty as standard. That's longer than the 3-year / 100 000 km cover most Japanese brands offer, and it covers the powertrain, drivetrain, and major components. The warranty is fully transferable to the next owner if you sell within the period, which protects resale value. Service plans are available separately for buyers who want predictable maintenance costs over the first 4 or 5 years.
Yes. BAIC operates a full vehicle assembly plant at the Coega Special Economic Zone outside Gqeberha — the only Chinese OEM with a complete manufacturing footprint in South Africa. The Coega plant supports local job creation, parts localisation, and means BAIC has a vested commercial interest in the long-term success of the South African market, not just import volumes. SA-built BAIC vehicles are engineered and validated for African road and climate conditions.
The BAIC X55 Plus is BAIC's best-selling model in South Africa. It's a 5-seat mid-size family SUV with a 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine, CVT automatic transmission, L2 ADAS safety features as standard, a panoramic sunroof, and a 12.3" digital infotainment screen. The X55 Plus competes directly with the Haval H6, Chery Tiggo 7 Pro, and Toyota RAV4 at a substantially lower price, which has driven much of BAIC's 40% sales growth in SA from 2024 to 2025.
The X55 Plus drives like a mid-size family SUV in its segment — composed at SA highway speeds (120 km/h cruising is effortless), light and easy in town traffic, and absorbent over the broken tar that's common on KZN secondary roads. The 1.5T petrol delivers 130 kW and pulls confidently up Drakensberg-class inclines. The CVT auto is smooth in normal driving and the cabin is well-insulated from wind and road noise. L2 ADAS — adaptive cruise, lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitoring — comes standard, which most rivals charge extra for.
Yes — the B40 Plus is a real body-on-frame 4x4, not a soft-roader pretending to be one. It has a ladder chassis, separate body construction, full-time 4x4 with low-range transfer case, rear differential lock, off-road mode selector with rock/sand/mud settings, and meaningful approach and departure angles. It's built to compete with the Suzuki Jimny and entry-level Land Rover Defender on capability, at well under half the Defender's price. KZN bushveld, sand tracks, and even technical Drakensberg trails are well within its envelope.
BAIC, Haval/GWM, and Chery are all credible Chinese brands competing in the same SA segments — none are obviously inferior. The differentiators: BAIC is the only one with full SA manufacturing (Coega plant), the only one with the 2025 G20 Summit government contract, and offers a strong 5-year / 150 000 km warranty. Haval/GWM has a longer SA presence and broader dealer footprint nationally. Chery offers very strong tech-per-rand value. At Midbay Motors, we sell BAIC because the SA manufacturing story and warranty length give buyers the strongest long-term peace of mind.
L2 ADAS (Level 2 Advanced Driver Assistance Systems) is standard on the X55 Plus and B40 Plus, which means adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, autonomous emergency braking, and 360-degree camera. Six to seven airbags are standard. ABS, EBD, ESP, hill-start assist, and hill-descent control are standard across the lineup. The X55 Plus has been independently safety-tested with strong results across Chinese and Australian safety regimes.
BAIC has hybrid (HEV) and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) variants in the global lineup, and hybrid SA introductions are confirmed across the 2026 model year. The X55 Plus HEV is the most likely first SA hybrid arrival, given the model's volume base. Speak to Midbay Motors directly for the latest SA arrival timing — hybrid variants from any OEM tend to land in waves rather than at once, and pricing is announced closer to launch.
BAIC resale value in South Africa has strengthened materially over the 2024–2025 period as the brand's volume base and dealer footprint expanded. The 5-year transferable warranty supports resale because a 4-year-old BAIC still has a year of factory warranty remaining. The Coega manufacturing footprint also reduces buyer concern about parts availability long-term, which historically suppressed Chinese-brand resale. Honest assessment: BAIC resale is now competitive with Korean brands and trending toward parity with Japanese.
The South African government awarded BAIC the official transport contract for the 2025 G20 Summit because BAIC is locally manufactured at Coega, supports SA jobs and industrial development, and meets the security, comfort, and reliability specifications required to transport heads of state and senior delegations safely. The contract is one of the strongest commercial trust signals available in any market — when a government has every option available and chooses your brand to move world leaders, that's an endorsement private buyers can rely on.
